YouTube 4,000 Watch Hours: How Long It Really Takes (Calculator + 2027 Change)

4,000 watch hours is 240,000 minutes. With a 3-minute average view, that is 80,000 views. See how long real channels take, use the calculator, and note the 8,000-hour rule for new applicants from February 2027.

YouTube 4,000 Watch Hours: How Long It Really Takes (Calculator + 2027 Change)

Answer first: 4,000 watch hours equals 240,000 minutes of public watch time in the last 365 days. With an average view duration of 3 minutes, that is about 80,000 views; at 5 minutes, about 48,000 views. Channels that post consistently usually reach it in 6 to 18 months; channels with one or two videos that take off reach it in weeks. And the target is about to double: creators who apply to the YouTube Partner Program on or after 1 February 2027 need 8,000 qualified watch hours.

What the rule actually says

To earn ad revenue in the YouTube Partner Program you need 1,000 subscribers plus one of two performance paths:

Path Until 31 January 2027 New applicants from 1 February 2027
Long-form 4,000 public watch hours in the last 365 days 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days
Shorts 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days

The two paths do not add up: Shorts views do not count toward watch hours and watch hours do not count toward Shorts views. Existing partners keep their status. The lower “fan funding” tier (memberships, Super Chat, Shopping) stays at 500 subscribers plus 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views. YouTube announced the change on 10 August 2026.

“Public” watch hours exclude private, unlisted and deleted videos, Shorts watched in the Shorts feed, and watch time from ads. “Qualified” is the stricter word YouTube is moving to: watch time it attributes to genuine viewing sessions after its own filtering.

The calculator

Watch hours = views x average view duration (minutes) / 60. Turn it round to see how many views you need:

Your average view duration Views needed for 4,000 hours Views needed for 8,000 hours (2027 rule)
2 minutes 120,000 240,000
3 minutes 80,000 160,000
5 minutes 48,000 96,000
8 minutes 30,000 60,000
15 minutes 16,000 32,000

Your average view duration is in YouTube Studio > Analytics > Content. Most small channels sit between 2 and 4 minutes, which is why average view duration, not upload count, is the lever that matters most.

How long it takes at different channel sizes

Spread over the 365-day window, 4,000 hours is 11 hours a day, or about 657 minutes. Here is what that looks like in daily views:

Daily views (at 3-minute average) Daily watch minutes Time to 4,000 hours Time to 8,000 hours
100 300 27 months (misses the 12-month window) never at this rate
250 750 about 11 months about 21 months (misses the window)
500 1,500 about 5.5 months about 11 months
1,000 3,000 under 3 months about 5.5 months
2,500 7,500 about 5 weeks about 10 weeks

The window is rolling: hours older than 365 days drop off. A channel doing 100 views a day at 3 minutes never qualifies, however long it keeps going, because it loses hours as fast as it adds them. Under the 2027 rule the break-even rate roughly doubles to about 450 views a day.

Six ways to get there faster

  1. Make longer videos only if people stay. A 12-minute video watched for 4 minutes beats a 4-minute video watched for 3, but a 20-minute video that loses everyone at minute 2 is worse than both. Check retention per video, not length.
  2. Playlists and end screens. Autoplay from a playlist is the cheapest watch time there is; every video should end by sending viewers to the next one.
  3. Search-led topics. Tutorials and explainers earn watch time for years. Entertainment peaks in a week and stops.
  4. Live streams count. A two-hour stream with 50 concurrent viewers is 100 watch hours in one evening. Streams and Premieres are the fastest organic route for small channels.
  5. Repurpose Shorts into long-form. Shorts bring subscribers but not watch hours. Point every Short at a long video that continues the topic.
  6. Promote the videos that already retain. Spend promotion (YouTube ads, communities, or a YouTube watch hours package) on the two or three videos with the highest average view duration. Watch time on a video that holds attention compounds because YouTube then recommends it more.

A straight word about promoted watch hours

A watch hours package sends viewers to the videos you choose with long view durations. It gets a stalled video in front of people and lifts its retention signals so YouTube’s own recommendations pick it up. What it does not do is guarantee that YouTube counts every minute toward the Partner Program: YouTube reviews channels by hand at the threshold and only counts watch time it classes as qualified. Use promotion to grow the audience that produces the hours, not as the only source of the hours, and never on a channel with reused or unoriginal content, which fails the manual review regardless of watch time.

FAQ

How many views is 4,000 watch hours? It depends on average view duration. At 3 minutes per view it is about 80,000 views; at 5 minutes, about 48,000; at 10 minutes, 24,000.

Do Shorts count toward 4,000 watch hours? No. Shorts watched in the Shorts feed are counted on the separate Shorts path (10 million views in 90 days, 20 million from February 2027). A Short watched on a regular watch page does count as watch time, but that is a small share.

How long is the 4,000 hours window? The last 365 days, rolling. Hours older than a year drop off.

Is the requirement really changing to 8,000 hours? Yes, for creators who apply on or after 1 February 2027. Channels already in the Partner Program keep their status. If you are close to 4,000 hours now, apply before the end of January 2027.

Can I buy watch hours to get monetized? You can buy views with long watch durations, and they can help a good video get recommended, but YouTube decides what counts as qualified watch time and checks channels manually. Treat promotion as a way to grow the audience, not as a substitute for it.
